A Youngstown father was indicted Thursday for violently shaking his 4-month-old daughter to death.

Evan Lee, 22, was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury on charges of murder, two counts of endangering children and one count of felonious assault.

The murder charge carries a 15-years-to-life maximum penalty.

Prosecutors said Lee shook Ila Lee, who was born on Christmas Eve, to death in May. She died soon after.

It’s the ninth homicide in Youngstown this year. There were 26 in all of 2012 and 18 at this time last year.

After the mother was killed by the father in an apparent dowry murder, the maternal grandparents took custody of the daughter. Then killer daddy SATHYANARAYANA SINGH was acquitted for Mom's murder.  A few years later he decided that he now wanted custody of the daughter. This after not visiting the girl or having any relationship with her at all. Then he apparently killed her too.

Bangalore: Man beats 8-year-old daughter to death
DHNS Bangalore, 26 July 2013

(DHNS):It’s another case of a young life snuffed out at the hands of those who were supposed to take care of her.

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly beaten to death by her father here on Thursday. Reason: The Class II student couldn’t memorise her lessons.

The West division police arrested Sathyanarayana Singh after he confessed to have beaten his daughter, Neha Singh, in a fit of rage for not studying properly.

Police sources said he had hit the girl with a rolling pin. Neha was the accused’s daughter from his first marriage.

Sathyanarayana, however, tried to shift the blame on a stranger. He claimed that somebody beat up Neha when she went to a nearby shop and that she collapsed on returning home. Sathyanarayana said Neha died by the time she was rushed to hospital.

The police were, however, alerted by a neighbour who suspected foul play.

“The circumstances under which the girl was found dead were mysterious. One of their neighbours alerted us. We grew suspicious after coming to know of the man’s background. He was accused of killing his first wife for dowry. The girl was his daughter from the first marriage. He said he beat the girl with a cane and she collapsed thereafter.

We have booked him for murder,” said Duggappa, ACP (Kengeri Gate sub-division). The body, which bore several injury marks, was taken to Victoria Hospital for autopsy.Sathyanarayana was married to Asha Singh, who died in 2006. Her parents Raghunath and Vasantha Singh, residents of Shimoga, had alleged dowry death. Sathyanarayana was subsequently arrested. After spending around six months in prison, he was acquitted.

Neha was only 10 months old then. Asha’s parents took her to Shimoga. After being released from prison, Sathyanarayana started a plastic mould factory in Timber Yard and married again. He was living with his mother Padma Bai, second wife and a one-and-a-half-year-old son from the second marriage.

Sathyanarayana had not visited Neha even once in the past seven years. In May, he suddenly turned up at Shimoga, claiming custody of his daughter. Raghunath told Deccan Herald that Sathyanarayana promised to take good care of the child. “We did not relent. He said as he had not divorced my daughter, he was the rightful custodian of the girl.

We unwillingly sent her. The girl could not adjust there. She had never seen her father before. She complained that her father and grandmother were harassing her and pleaded us to take her back. We thought that she would eventually adjust. But he killed her, like my daughter. He is a demon,” Raghunath said. In his statement to the police, Sathyanarayana said when he asked Neha, a class II student at SGM school in Avalahalli, some questions from her notes, she could not answer. He asked Neha to learn her lessons properly. The family left for a temple in the afternoon, leaving her alone at home to study. He claimed to have found Neha asleep on returning home. An enraged Sathyanarayana then beat her up with a baton.

D Rajappa, DCP (West), told Deccan Herald that the Byatarayanapura police have registered a case of murder and arrested Sathyanarayana. The police are investigating into the role of Padma Bai and his second wife, he added.

Father charged after leaving child home alone with weapons

MIAMI (WSVN) -- A South Florida father accused of leaving his now 4-year-old daughter home alone with weapons and a grenade has been arrested and charged with child neglect.

Authorities arrested 25-year-old Luis Bianchi on Thursday. He is being held on $5,000 bond.

"What were the circumstances of leaving this child with such an arsenal at her hands?" said Miami Police Detective Willie Moreno.

Neighbors called 911 after they spotted the little girl wandering the hallways outside of her apartment on 922 Southwest Third St. in Little Havana, Wednesday afternoon.

When police arrived on the scene they called out for an adult several times. When they did not received an answer, they entered the apartment. "We didn't find any adults, any other human being inside, but what we did find was one grenade, several assault riffles and an arsenal of ammunition," said Moreno.

Police called the bomb squad to the scene and all residents in the building were evacuated. The grenade was removed and rendered safe. The weapons and ammo were also removed.

According to an arrest affidavit, Bianchi admitted leaving his daughter home alone but said her mother was on the way to pick her up. He also said his weapons were secured and away from the reach of his daughter.

The child, who turned 4 years old today, is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. A dependency hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Her grandfather said he was shocked that his son would do such a thing. "He has a license to carry guns. He has a security license ... I just don't believe it," said the grandfather through a translator.

Police are glad the little girl was unharmed because the guns were in clear reach.

Drunk dad threatened to drop his own baby

SONYA MCLEAN – 25 JULY 2013 02:30 PM

A FATHER has been given a five-year suspended sentence after he was caught drunkenly swinging his four-week-old baby boy.

A court heard that the man threatened to drop the infant if gardai came any closer to him.

Officers were concerned for the child, who was not crying or moving. The baby was later found to have some bruising, but was otherwise fully alert with normal vital signs.

The 30-year-old, who cannot be name to protect the child's identity, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to wilfully exposing a child in his care to injury by, while intoxicated, swinging the child around with its head unsupported on February 28, 2012.

He also admitted possession of a blade on the same occasion. He has three previous convictions, including a drug offence for which he was jailed.

Gda Ciaran O'Neill told prosecutor Garret Baker that the man told officers in interview that he "felt s***" about what had happened and said he would not have done it had it not been for the alcohol and prescription tablets he had taken.

He agreed with Ann Marie Lawlor, defending, that her client said he had the knife because his partner had previously been threatened.

He accepted that both the man and his partner believed this threat was credible, which was why he had removed the baby from the house.

Judge Patrick McCartan said at an initial sentence hearing that he had grave concerns about the case and adjourned it for updated HSE reports.

 EFFORTS

"While I accept the proposition of recklessness and disregard, the seriousness of the case was the fact that he removed an infant of that age from his home at midnight," the judge said.

He said also had concerns about the man's involvement in drugs.

"Having said that it's quite clear that he has made very significant efforts to put right the very grievous wrong he did."

Judge McCartan had adjourned sentencing previously pending an indication from the HSE that it was safe for the man to move back in with his family.

However he was told by Mr Baker yesterday that the HSE hasn't been able to provide this information.

Dad charged with manlaughter in death of 4-year-old daughter during his custody/visitation time (Sebring, Florida)

A concern not raised here is why dad CHRISTOPHER KING, had custody/visitation rights at all. Notice that the mother had voiced concerns about the children's safety before, which the authorites (as usual) ignored. There was obviously evidence of child neglect and probable drug abuse, but the Florida's DCF looked the other way, because that's what they do with when they are committed to Joint Custody Uber Alles and Daddy's Rights No Matter What. And now a 4-year-old girl is dead.

Also notice that one child showed visible signs of being afraid of Dad, which points to more serious abuse.

So who gave this father his visitation/custodial rights? And just what were his rights? Did he have full custody? What? As usual, we are not told.

Concerns raised about father before daughter died in car

Jay Meisel | Highlands Today
Published: July 28, 2013

SEBRING - If evidence exists that a father was using drugs the night before the morning he's accused of leaving his daughter to eventually die in a hot vehicle, it can be used during his trial, attorneys agreed last week.

But any evidence of drug use before that won't be a part of the testimony, the attorneys agreed.

Records released last week by the State Attorney's Office also indicate that concerns were raised previously about Christopher King, 35, the father, before the child died in the car. However, it was indicated at a hearing that any contacts with state Department of Children and Family Services won't be a part of the trial because none of those situations contributed to the death of the child.

King was arrested in connection with the death of his 2-year-old daughter, Amelia King, and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect with a great harm after an autopsy showed that the daughter died of heat stroke.

Initially, King told authorities that his daughter and her 4-year-old brother were playing outside and that the brother accidentally locked his sister in the car. But records show that an acquaintance of King told authorities that he told him several stories about what happened.

The brother told authorities that they forgot Amelia was in the vehicle and that the father, who took a nap after getting home, didn't remember that until the brother awoke him from the nap, the report said.

Records say that Heather King, the mother of Amelia, who is divorced from Christopher King, told authorities that a month before Amelia died she went to King's home to pick up or visit her children and discovered that "the children were dirty and that Amelia had feces smeared on her butt," the report said.

The mother also told authorities that earlier in the year she had concerns about the children's safety because she believed King was using drugs, the report said.

She also said that several contacts with the Department of Children and Family Services about the children occurred, the report said.

One child, who was apparently not with King at the time of Amelia's death, "was afraid to be left alone with Christopher," the mother told authorities, the report said.

The mother told authorities that the child was being treated for mental abuse and post traumatic stress disorder, the report said.

Friends told authorities that Christopher King would go out and leave the children in the vehicle, but make sure the air conditioning was running.

The reports contained several references regarding drug use. One man told authorities that King has smoked methamphetamine, but when that happened was unclear. The same witness indicated that King and he got high together, but didn't specify the type of drug they used.

Another person told investigators that King had asked him to go in his house the day Amelia died and dispose of marijuana.

No date has been set for a trial.

Police: Rock Hill dad kicked son, 12, in the back

ROCK HILL A Rock Hill boy who was sitting at a dining room table suffered bruises to his neck and back after police say his father grabbed and kicked him on Friday.

Police responded to a home in southern Rock Hill at about 11 p.m. when a woman complained that her ex-husband assaulted their 12-year-old son, according to a Rock Hill police report.

The woman told officers that while her son sat at the dining room table, the father, 40, grabbed the boy’s neck, lifted him up and then kicked him in the back, shoving him out of the dining room, the report states.

Police spoke with the boy, who confirmed the allegations against the father, according to the report. Officers also photographed the boy’s injuries, which authorities said were consistent with being kicked in the back.

Police arrested the father and charged him with unlawful conduct toward a child. He was granted a $5,000 bond and sent to the York County Detention Center.

Jayson Jones was arrested July 9 in Ouachita Parish, La., and was taken Friday to the Harrison County Jail, according to a release from the Marshall Police Department.

Police said the 7-month-old was taken unresponsive to the emergency room at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Marshall more than a year ago on July 14. Medical personnel were unable to resuscitate the child. Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Westy Meisenheimer pronounced the infant dead and ordered an autopsy. The infant’s death was ruled a homicide.

A Harrison County grand jury on June 27 issued a sealed indictment for Jones on a capital murder charge. Jones was taken into custody July 9 in Louisiana.

Jones refused extradition but was taken July 26 to Marshall after a governor’s warrant was issued.

Oak Bluffs Father Accused of Inflicting Severe Brain Injury on Child

Sara Brown Monday, July 29, 2013 - 2:45pm

A 19-year-old Oak Bluffs man was arraigned Monday morning on a charge of assault and battery on a child with substantial injury after his infant daughter allegedly sustained a severe brain injury.

According to Cape and Islands assistant district attorney Laura Marshard, Shaun Sicsico’s 12-week-old daughter was brought to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Saturday evening with a severe brain injury. The child was later airlifted to Boston Children’s Hospital.

Doctors said the injuries were consistent with abuse, Ms. Marshard said in court, including bruising on all four limbs. A doctor said the child was in a medically-induced coma with a fatal brain injury, according to Ms. Marshard, and the injuries were consistent with landing on something soft like a bed or couch.

Ms. Marshard said Mr. Sicsico was interviewed by state police and Oak Bluffs police Det. Nicholas Curelli, and he allegedly told police that he had spun the child and may have spun her too hard. After that, two people came to the home and the child appeared to be having a seizure, she said, and the visitors insisted that the child be brought to the hospital.

A statement of facts by Detective Curelli said attending physicians and Dr. Alice Newton, the medical director of child protection at the hospital, believe the injuries are consistent with abuse, he wrote, and the injuries most likely occurred sometime Saturday.

The parents of the child brought the child to the hospital, he said, and Mr. Sicsico was arrested after being interviewed. The Department of Children and Families has emergency legal custody of the victim, he said.

“Further charges may follow upon worsening of victim’s condition,” Detective Curelli wrote.

Ms. Marshard said the mother of the child, Mr. Sicsico’s girlfriend, was in Boston with the child. Ms. Marshard requested bail of $75,000.

Two women cried in court as the facts of the case were discussed.

Attorney Ryan Searle, representing Mr. Sicsico during the arraignment, requested bail of $1,500, and said Mr. Sicsico indicated that he had never harmed, shaken or hurt the child.

Ms. Searle said Mr. Sicsico said the child had been acting strangely on the day she was brought to the hospital, and that the baby seemed to be having a seizure.

Ms. Searle said Mr. Sicsico is unemployed and has lived on the Vineyard for the last two years. Bail was set at $50,000 by district court Judge Thomas Barrett, and Mr. Sicsico was ordered not to have contact with the child. Robert Manning was appointed as his attorney, and a pretrial hearing scheduled for Thursday, August 1.

Police arrest man accused of jumping out of 2nd story window with 2-week-old

PITTSBURGH — Investigators spent several hours searching for a man who ran from police with his 2-week-old baby early Monday morning.

The child’s mother told Channel 11 News that 32-year-old Justin Comans jumped out of a window in East Liberty, with the child strapped onto his body in a baby carrier, when police attempted to serve a protection from abuse order on him.

The child’s mother, Shilina Davis, said she and Comans got into an argument early Monday morning. Davis said she then filed an emergency PFA on him. When police arrived to serve Comans with the order, investigators said he jumped out of the home’s second-floor window.

“I am patiently waiting and hoping that he will come to his sense and bring him [the baby] home, where he needs to be,” Davis said. “Please bring him home.”

Comans was arrested several hours later at a home in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood.

“Picture that – someone kidnapped their own kid,” Comans said as he was being led out of police headquarters. “This is not fair. I didn’t take my own son with my own name.”

The child was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh to be checked for injuries. Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Scott Schubert said the baby did not appear to be injured.

Schubert said Comans will be charged with endangering the welfare of a child and kidnapping.

Houma man arrested for abuse of his 10 year-old son

Tuesday, 30 July 2013 08:14

Houma, La. - The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office has arrested a Houma man for allegedly abusing his 10 year-old son, according to a police spokesman.

An officer was on patrol Tuesday morning in the area of Grand Caillou Road when he located a 10 year-old child walking along the highway.

The deputy encountered the child and questioned him about his destination. The boy told the officer that he was attempting to walk home to his residence in east Houma near the tunnel.

When the deputy arrived at the home, the woman there identified herself as the child's grandmother. The grandmother indicated that the child did not live with her and that he resided with his father on Grand Caillou Road.

After further investigation, the child disclosed that he has suffered abuse at the hands of his father while in his care. Obvious fresh and scarred cigarette burns were noted on the child's hands and feet. Massive scarring on the child's knees was also noted from the child being forced to kneel in rice while holding several pounds of textbooks for long periods of time.

The child was taken to the hospital. Medical staff treated his injuries and also noted that the child was severely malnourished.

The Department of Children and Family Services has custody of the boy.

The father, identified as 34 year-old Nicholas Verdin, was arrested and booked for one count of cruelty to a juvenile.

Father Found, Charged After Wandering Girl Led Police to Apartment Full of Weapons

Police say Luis Bianchi, 25, was arrested and charged with child neglect.

Thursday, Jul 25, 2013 | Updated 6:48 PM EDT

Police have found the father of the girl left alone in an apartment full of weapons in Little Havana.

Luis Bianchi, 25, is being held on $5,000 bond on child neglect charges, according to Miami Police.

Officials began looking for the man Wednesday night when they were alerted that a 3-year-old was roaming the halls of her father's apartment at 922 SW 3rd Street.

When police arrived, they entered the apartment that the girl and neighbors said she lived in to try to find her parents. When they checked the bedroom, officers noticed several high-powered weapons, specifically AR-15s, and a grenade sitting on a table in plain view, according to an arrest affidavit.

Officials said the weapons were unsecured and in arms reach of the child.

Police say Bianchi turned himself in after seeing the report on the evening news. He told officials he left his daughter at the apartment at about 6 p.m. after speaking to her mother, who said she was on her way, the affidavit said.

Since he was running late to work, he said he sat his daughter down in front of the television, put a couch against the door to his room where the weapons were and left, according to the affidavit.

He told police that he left the door to the apartment locked before leaving, officials said. When police asked him about the weapons, he said he leaves them on a table, but blocks the door to his room with the couch, the affidavit said.

However, officials said the couch was not completely blocking the door.

A man who said he is the girl's grandfather said Wednesday that his son had a permit to carry guns, but perhaps not a grenade.

Also, Thursday, the Department of Children and Families has to do a home study to see who will get custody of the girl. Her mother was at a custody hearing but the girl had been with Bianchi after the mother had said last year that she couldn't financially take care of her. There is another hearing set for Friday.

Father locked up for causing brain damage to his baby girl after shaking her.

6:30pm Wednesday 31st July 2013 in News

By Neil Hunter.

A BABY was left brain damaged after being shaken by her father - because he was "under stress" with work and decorating the family home.

Paul Roberts' pitiful excuse emerged during a court hearing yesterday when he was locked up for 21 months for harming his tiny daughter.

The 35-year-old's lawyer spoke at length about what impact the case has had on the former bus driver - and barely mentioned the injured child.

"It goes without saying that he is devastated at the prospect of a custodial sentence," Peter Wishlade, mitigating, told Teesside Crown Court.

"He has worked all his life. He lost his job as a result of this and retrained as a bus driver and lost that when they found out he was coming to court.

"He is going to be faced with difficulty for the rest of his life in relation to employment as a result of this.

"This is a tragedy not only for Mr Roberts and his wife, but also for his family who accompany him at court today. "He is never going to forget it or forgive himself for what happened at a time when he was under stress at work and decorating the house."

The court heard how the 11-week-old girl was floppy and pale with breathing problems when Roberts called an ambulance to their home.

Hospital scans revealed serious bleeding on the brain, said prosecutor Rachel Masters, and both Roberts and his wife were suspected.

Even though he had been left looking after their two children that night, the father denied deliberately causing any injuries in September 2011.

It was more than a year later when he confessed during a custody hearing with his now ex-wife, and police later charged him.

Roberts, of Whitley Road, Tornaby, near Stockton, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm when he appeared in court.

Mr Wishlade said he was from an "exemplary" family and described the actions as "a momentary lapse of reason and loss of temper".

Judge Tony Briggs told Roberts that his initial denials and the knock-on effect for his wife and children made the matter worse.

"You lost control of yourself and shook her with sufficient violence to cause serious bleeding to the brain," the judge said.

"An attack by a man of your age and your background and your knowledge on a child like that is obviously a very serious matter.

"Children of this age must be protected, and it must be understood by everybody that shaking a very young child of only weeks of age is a matter which must attract custody save for in the most exceptional circumstances."

Man arrested after leaving baby with stranger, allegedly assaulting child's mother

Jul. 31, 2013 | Written by Associated Press

GREELEY — The father of an infant has been arrested after police say he took his son from the boy’s mother and then left him with a woman he’d never met while he tried to flee.

Greeley police say Alvin Padilla confronted the boy’s mother on Monday over custody of their son. Police say Padilla struck the mother and then got into his car and drove off with the boy.

Police say Padilla left the child with a woman he didn’t know and told her the police were after him. Authorities say he returned to retrieve the child while officers were investigating.

Padilla is facing charges of child abuse, harassment and violation of a restraining order.

The baby was dropped off to a resident in the 1900 block of 12th Avenue in Greeley at 7:17 p.m. Monday, according to police.

Father held for trial in infant's death

A West Philadelphia man who told police he accidentally punched his infant son while twice swatting the family dog away was held for trial on murder charges Tuesday by a Philadelphia judge.

Samuel N. Cabrera, 27, will stand trial in the April 9 death of his 3-month-old, Samuel Jr.

Municipal Court Judge James M. DeLeon rejected defense attorney Francis Carmen's argument that Cabrera should not face trial for first-degree murder with its mandatory life sentence if convicted.

"This is parenting gone horribly wrong," Carmen told DeLeon. "How does this ever rise to a fully formed decision that 'I'm going to kill my own child?' "

DeLeon cited testimony by Philadelphia Assistant Medical Examiner Aaron Rosen that the infant had two partly healed bone fractures that could signify a history of abuse.

Rosen, questioned by Assistant District Attorney Lorraine Donnelly, said Samuel Jr. bled to death internally after his liver was cut. Rosen said the baby had nine broken ribs.

"There would have had to be a significant amount of force to fracture ribs and lacerate the liver to that extent," Rosen said. "There's no appropriate handling of a baby that could ever cause injuries like this."

Emergency personnel were called to Cabrera's house in the 600 block of North 63d Street about 3:50 p.m. April 9 after the baby's mother, Jennifer Wycoff, 28, found him cold and not breathing.

The couple lived with their 16-month-old daughter and Wycoff's three school-age daughters.

Cabrera gave two statements to police. The first was to Detective Gregory Meissler of the Special Victims Unit at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as doctors tried to save the infant's life.

Meissler testified that Cabrera said he and the child's great-grandmother took him for an 11 a.m. doctor visit that day while Wycoff and several children were shopping.

When they got home about noon, Cabrera said, he put his son to sleep upstairs and checked on the infant several times.

Meissler said Cabrera told him Wycoff got home about 3:20 p.m. and found that the baby was not breathing.

The next day, after Samuel Jr. died, Cabrera was interviewed by Homicide Detective William Sierra.

Sierra testified that Cabrera first said he had accidentally hurt his son when he tripped twice carrying him upstairs to bed. Sierra said that he was skeptical and that Cabrera then said the family dog had run upstairs and jumped on the bed with his son.

"I wanted to take a swing at the dog, but he jumped out of the way, and I hit my son," Sierra said Cabrera told him.

Cabrera said he noticed that the baby was having trouble breathing and performed CPR. After a bottle, he said, the infant fell asleep.

"I didn't tell anybody I hit the child," Sierra quoted Cabrera as saying. "I was scared and didn't know what to do."

Trials in autistic girl's death not likely this year

Melissa Stoddard, 11, died from a lack of oxygen to the brain. Her father and stepmother will be tried in her death.

SARASOTA - Misty and Kenneth Stoddard, the caretakers of an 11-year-old autistic child who died in December, will not likely stand trial this year.

Melissa Stoddard, an Oak Park student, died from lack of oxygen to the brain after she had been tied to a board and gagged. Her body was covered with bruises in what was one of the worst cases of child abuses that local authorities have seen.

During a Tuesday court hearing, Circuit Court Judge Frederick Mercurio did not set a trial date, but said he hopes the hefty case — one with at least 60 witnesses and 1,700 pages of court discovery documents — will begin in early 2014.

Misty Stoddard, who is Melissa's stepmother, is accused of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm. Melissa's biological father, Kenneth Stoddard, who is out on bail, has been charged with aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm. Misty Stoddard, 36, who appeared Tuesday with short, dark hair, has been an inmate at the county jail since Dec. 20.

“I won't say she's been in a hurry . . . but she'd like to get this case resolved sooner than later,” the judge said during the short case-management hearing.

Misty Stoddard's defense team asked for her trial to follow Kenneth Stoddard's trial.

“We believe his testimony will be critical,” said attorney Mark Brewer.

But Prosecutor Karen Fraivillig said she has no intention of making a plea deal with Kenneth Stoddard or using him as a witness.

The state determines which trial goes first, she added. “It's my call.”

Surveillance video captured Kenneth Stoddard buying Velcro straps, boards and duct tape, which authorities believe was used to restrain Melissa, according to an investigative report from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

The next step is for witnesses — including two of Misty Stoddard's children — to testify in depositions. Mercurio asked the attorneys to meet again about November to give an update on the case.
This month, the Department of Children and Families released the investigation report into Melissa's death that showed she had been sexually abused by her brother back in North Carolina.

Last summer, she moved to Sarasota County to live with her father, her stepmother, who was pregnant, and their blended family of five children.

Her life in Sarasota was tumultuous.

A neighbor heard loud yelling and screaming coming from the back of the Stoddards' rural Sarasota County house at 9021 Delft Road. The sounds were of a child's cries and an adult woman yelling and slaps, he told authorities in the sheriff's report.

School officials were also worried about Melissa, according to the DCF report.

The special-needs child repeated phrases, such as “Get out of my house,” which her teacher thought she was mimicking from home. She was absent from school for long periods of time so the Oak Park staff would not see her bruises, according to authorities.

Misty Stoddard discovered the girl was not breathing in her bedroom, and Melissa was taken to a hospital Dec. 12 and died five days later.

Melissa's medical evaluation report had said she was tied to a board, which caused wounds and bruises on her body as she struggled to free herself from Velcro, straps and tape.

MONONA, Iowa - Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding a Monona man wanted on drug and child endangerment charges.

In a press release Tuesday, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said they're looking for Troy Laufenberg, wanted on four charges: child endangerment, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The DCI said charges stem from an incident that happened July 15 at Laufenberg's apartment on East Center Street in Monona. Local police couldn't give specific details, but say they were called there for a report of an injured 18-month-old.

Four days later, authorities executed a search warrant on the property. They said they issued the arrest warrants for Laufenburg based on the evidence they collected.

Monona's police chief says as time wears on, it could become more and more difficult to track Laufenberg down.

"I thought the first week with the Facebook, it went viral, and I thought then that some concerned citizen would come forward. I hope he's still in the state," Chief Jane Scott-Quandahl said.

Police think Laufenberg could be in the Dubuque area, because he has friends and family members there.

If you have any information on Laufenburg's location, call the DCI at 563-599-4239.

Authorities don't think Laufenburg is dangerous, but they're telling people to keep their distance.
